Research Project Modeling the spread of infectious diseases across dynamic social networks in Burundi
Biography Mr. Nathanaël Hategekimana is a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Public Health Research Programme at the University of Burundi, with a focus on Epidemiology. His research explores how infectious diseases spread through dynamic social networks, applying advanced modeling techniques to inform public health responses. He holds a master’s degree in Biostatistics from the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin, where he investigated risks associated with zoonotic diseases. He has received specialized training in managing zoonotic outbreaks via the World Health Organization, research methodology from ITOCA, agricultural research through AGORA, and One Health practices with the World Bank Group. Currently serving as a National Consultant and Data Analysis Expert for Burundi’s General Census of Population, Housing, Agriculture, and Livestock, he concentrates on mortality data analytics. Since January 2025, he has been a Lecturer-Researcher at the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) and teaches Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Hope Africa University and the Official University of Bukavu, while also mentoring student research. He is an active member of the Association for the Protection of the Environment (ASEPE), and has earned prestigious fellowships, including the DAAD scholarship. Proficient in R, Python, STATA, SPSS, and Eviews, he is committed to using data science and disease modeling to shape effective public health strategies.
