Biography | Mr. Cassien Nduwimana is a dedicated medical virologist with over four years of experience in genomic surveillance and infectious disease research. He earned his MSc in Medical Virology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya and holds a BSc in Medical Laboratory Sciences from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Burundi. Currently, he serves at INSP’s National Reference Laboratory in the Genomic Sequencing Unit, while pursuing a PhD in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics at the University of Burundi. His research explores molecular epidemiology, host-pathogen dynamics, diagnostic accuracy, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Cassien is skilled in genomic sequencing technologies like Illumina, Nanopore, DNBSeq, and CycloneSeq, and has intermediate capabilities in bioinformatics, focusing on data analysis and spatial epidemiological mapping. He has played a pivotal role in genomic surveillance of key pathogens including Plasmodium, Vibrio cholerae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV, SARS-CoV-2, and Monkeypox virus. His contributions have appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals such as BMC Genomics, Eurosurveillance, and Microbiology Spectrum. In addition to his research, he is a reviewer for BMC Infectious Diseases and actively engages in professional communities like ANTEBBU and ASLM, furthering collaborative science in Africa. |
